D.H.劳伦斯的短篇小说往往通过常见的题材体现其艺术的独特魅力和丰富的象征意味,借颜色、味道等形象载体,劳伦斯巧妙地在《白袜》《菊馨》等名篇中表达了自己对工业文明和两性人际关系之间冲突的关注,并作出了有益的探寻。作者以《白袜》和《菊馨》为例,较全面深入地分析了象征主义在劳伦斯短篇小说中的运用。

The topics in D.H.Lawrence's short stories are usually common.However,he always gives us the brilliant presentations of people living in his time.The usage of symbolism is the key to achieve this effect.Take The White Stocking and The Odour of Chrysanthemums for example,by using color,odour and other means of symbols for portraying,Lawrence shows us the artistic charm and profound meanings of his works as well as his attention to the conflicts between industrial civilization and interpersonal relations,especially between sexes.This article is to give us a brief analysis of the usage in D.H.Lawrence's short stories,and to appreciate his styles of presentation of human nature through those symbols like white stocking,pink chrysanthemum and so on.
